International school students and their homestay family enjoy a day at the Melbourne Zoo
Summer in Australia is in full swing. With COVID restrictions easing across many states and territories, there are lots of activities and events for international students to enjoy.
If you are remaining in Australia over summer, here is a selection of activities designed to ensure you make the most of the break.
These programs are a great opportunity for you to brush up on your English language skills, develop employability skills, or simply socialise and meet new people. The programs and activities range from virtual networking and online learning, to face-to-face festive events.
Your local student hub, study destination agency website, or education provider will have full details of what’s on locally. Below are just some of the programs on offer for international students this summer:
- Cairns, Queensland
The Student Summer Holiday Campaign will help you make new friends and build your employability experiences as you explore Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest through the Play, Volunteer and Work Program.
- Melbourne, Victoria
In Victoria, the Department of Education and Training has organised a range of activities for students and their homestay families including free tickets to attend tourist attractions such as the Melbourne Zoo.
The Study Melbourne website includes an essential guide for student events in Melbourne and the surrounding areas.
International school students can enjoy a summer school program that includes English classes, Indigenous education, and tourism experiences.
- Gold Coast, Queensland
A line-up of events, workshops, and festive vibes are available for the Gold Coast international student community. The Gold Coast Student Hub is providing workshops to improve English language and job seeking skills, along with free social events such as the Live Music and Farm Animals event and Gold Class Movie Sessions.

Student hubs throughout Australia have invited international students to join them for Christmas Day and end of year celebrations. There are also many learning and social events available to international students and many of these are free.
These state and territory, and city destination programs demonstrate Australia’s care and support for international students who are unable to return home for the holiday season. They are offered in addition to various education provider based activities that are also being provided throughout Australia.
