Family members and your Student visa

Studying in Australia can be an exciting experience for you and your family. If you plan to bring family members with you, it is important to understand the Student visa requirements before you apply.

Only eligible applicants can include family members in a Student visa application. Depending on your circumstances, this may include applicants who:

  • are studying a PhD degree
  • are sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Defence
  • receive a fully-funded foreign government scholarship
  • are eligible students from a Pacific country or an ASEAN member country.

If an exemption applies, family members you may be able to include are:

  • your partner (spouse or de facto partner)
  • your dependent children
  • your partner's dependent children.

Important things to know:

  • If you are eligible to include family members, everyone included in the application must be in the same location when you apply.
  • Student visa holders cannot add family members after their Student visa has been granted.
  • Bringing family members can affect your study plans, accommodation and budget. Understand the requirements before making study, travel or relocation plans.
