My name is Thao, but everyone calls me Greene. I arrived in Australia nine years ago to pursue my tertiary education. I chose Canberra because I have family here, and it consistently ranks highly for environmental quality and living standards.
I attended the University of Canberra as a Software Engineering major, and it shaped me in more ways than I expected. What I valued most was how practical the learning was. We didn’t just study theory — we built things.
My projects ranged from a real-life cruise business analysis to developing restaurant websites and an Android mobile app for AI and Machine Learning cloud services. These experiences provided me with a holistic, job-ready skillset.
One of the most rewarding subjects I took was a ‘capstone’ project in my final year. This allowed me to work with an industry partner to deliver solutions to real organisational problems. I quickly realised how closely this mirrored a professional workplace. It wasn't just about providing a software solution; it was also about engaging stakeholders, planning, managing risks and collaborating with a diverse team.
Our team performed exceptionally well and received multiple nominations. Shortly after, I was offered an internship, which became a full-time contract before I even completed my final semester. I am incredibly grateful for how closely the University of Canberra collaborates with industry partners to provide these opportunities.
Today, I work as a software engineer. My role involves programming, reviewing collaborative code and contributing to solution design discussions. As I progressed in my career, I also began mentoring interns, pitching software products, delegating technical issues and engaging with external stakeholders.
Last year, my career took me to Perth, Singapore and Indonesia—experiences that have significantly broadened both my professional and cultural perspectives.
My journey from international student to industry mentor reflects how Australia empowers students to grow beyond the classroom.
The University played a pivotal role in my career readiness. The Career Hub supported me with job applications, portfolio building and interview preparation. Additionally, the scholarship department provided internal financial assistance and connected me to external opportunities within the private sector.
After nine years here, I believe Australia is a premier destination for digital studies. As an English-speaking nation, Australia offers world-class technology education. Furthermore, its location in the Asia-Pacific region provides unique exposure to Asian markets and a diverse student body. I am confident that my education here has prepared me to work anywhere in the world as a global citizen.
Beyond my career, I truly love my life in Australia. As a sports enthusiast, there is no better place to be. I enjoy running, hiking, swimming, and snow sports—all of which are highly popular here.
During the winter, I spend my time on the ski slopes, practicing the sport I love and meeting like-minded friends. In other seasons, I am usually out running or hiking, surrounded by Australia’s stunning nature and wildlife.
While I was studying, there were times when things felt mentally overwhelming. I set high standards for myself and worked hard to achieve the goals I had set.
If you are planning to study in Australia and feel worried about the uncertainty, I can assure you: it is worth it. You also have all the support that you need to succeed; you just have to be brave and ask for it.
I’ve proven to myself that I can do this, and I trust that you can too.
