I'm from South Korea, and I’ve always dreamed of studying abroad. After looking into different countries, I came to Australia on a Working Holiday visa to see if I’d enjoy living here.
During my first year, I absolutely fell in love with the lifestyle and people in Australia, and I knew it would be worth pursuing my studies here.
As I wanted to achieve my dream on my own, I worked in manufacturing and construction, operating heavy machinery to save up for my tuition. Eventually, I was able to fund my studies myself.
Studying in Australia was my dream, and now I'm living that dream. All the hard work was worth it to truly appreciate life in this beautiful country.
What I love most about studying on the Gold Coast is the incredible lifestyle. I can study at the university or local libraries during the day, then head to stunning beaches or peaceful hinterlands to unwind. The balance between study and nature here is amazing.
On top of that, I’m working at Gold Coast University Hospital as an Undergraduate Student in Nursing (USIN), supporting nurses and gaining hands-on experience in the healthcare field. It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally.
One of my favourite experiences so far has been being part of the Gold Coast Mayor’s Student Ambassador Program. I had the honour of representing South Korea as an international student and met 21 inspiring students from 13 different countries. It helped me open up my perspective, grow my leadership skills and feel more connected to the local community.
My favourite weekend activity on the Gold Coast is walking along The Spit or surfing at Currumbin Beach, which has great beginner-friendly waves.
I also enjoy visiting the Sunday markets at HOTA (Home of the Arts), an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet.
During my journey here, I’ve met so many kind-hearted people, including an Aussie family I now call “my Australian family”.
Before I moved to a Student visa, I worked as au pair (like a live-in babysitter) for an Australian family. I lived with them for about three months and they really helped me adjust to Australian culture.
Even after I moved to other parts of Australia, whenever I missed the feeling of family, I went back to visit them. I have my family in Korea, of course, but having another family here - one that sees me for who I am, understands me, and truly cares for me - is incredibly precious.
Before I started university, when I needed somewhere to stay for a week, they welcomed me into their home again. When I had to visit Gold Coast to look for accommodation, they even drove me to inspections and helped me decide.
Their children call me their “Korean sister,” and my host mum calls me her “Korean daughter.” They are my Australian family and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I love this country.
Australia is an incredible country that offers a vibrant lifestyle, breathtaking nature, and a beautiful harmony of diverse cultures.
Now, I’m giving back the love I received by volunteering at a local hospital, playing piano in the lobby to connect with patients and bring them moments of peace. There are countless opportunities here, and the more you seek them, the more you’ll find.
If anyone is considering Australia as their study destination, I’d say this: “No worries, mate. You’ll be alright.”
