Choosing an Australian program

Hi, this is Darius. I chose to study for an Australian Master of Information Studies degree with Charles Sturt University via HKU SPACE, a local study centre in Hong Kong.

The program has a long-standing and strong reputation in the library and information sector in Hong Kong. And with the convenience of enrolling through a local study centre and the recognition of prior learning, the choice was clear to me.

Studying online and visiting campus

I studied online but visited the Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga campus in Australia for my graduation ceremony in April 2024. I met a classmate from Melbourne, several lecturers, and other new graduates from the program. The campus environment and the hospitality of the staff were very impressive and unforgettable.

After some hurdles and pauses, I feel privileged to have gained a master’s degree through a pathway that fits my professional and personal needs the most — at my own pace.

Advice for students considering a TNE course

In Hong Kong Cantonese, there is a nickname for a degree certificate: “saa zi”. This roughly translates to “a pricey piece of paper”. Undertaking an Australian degree gave me more than just a saa zi. Through intercultural education and communication, I gained an inclusive and forward-thinking vision of the roles of librarianship and scholarly communication in society.

Speaking as a former international student of on-campus international programs, I can say that the academic and personal attainments from an online or transnational program are just as advantageous. There are even the added benefits of being able to continue a professional career while you study, and less financial stress.

I strongly encourage prospective transnational education students to embrace the opportunities and challenges and proudly claim the experience and growth, beyond gaining the saa zi, by making meaningful connections with peers and teachers – even through online learning.

Career aspirations

I have been working in higher education governance for the past five years, and I envision taking on more progressive and impactful roles. My goal is to realise my international outlook on higher education, strengthened by my transnational Australian education experience.
