I first came to Australia I was in high school. I stayed in Geelong and went to school there for a few months as part of an exchange program.
I just fell in love with everything, the welcoming people, the diversity, nature and the relaxed but warm atmosphere. One thing that really stood out was how seriously students take their studies here. It felt like such a good environment to push myself and grow, so I knew I wanted to come back for university.
I am now studying for a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne.
Making friends has been way easier than I expected. I’m naturally pretty outgoing and love chatting with people, but the friendliness of everyone here makes it even easier. Also, so many Aussies love Japan, which has been such a nice way to connect.
At the same time, I think it’s important to step out of your comfort zone. You need to be the one to start the conversation or join in, but I actually found that really fun. I also realised something unexpected — my personality really clicks with Aussies, which makes everything feel so natural.
Melbourne is such a student-friendly city. It feels cosy, supportive, and full of chances to try new things.
There are so many opportunities to meet people, get involved, and grow outside the classroom. Becoming a 2025 Study Melbourne Ambassador was one of the biggest ones for me. I got to share my story on the SBS Japanese podcast and attend networking events I never imagined going to as a student.
I also love that there are so many beautiful study spots around the city. They keep me focused and make studying feel more enjoyable.
Thrifting (second-hand shopping) in Fitzroy or Brunswick with friends is my go-to. I also love cafe hopping and drinking matcha.
Recently, I’ve been obsessed with hunting down the best Greek and Italian food. Melbourne’s food scene is next-level, and I’m so grateful I came here because I never would’ve known how much I love Greek food otherwise!
Living and studying in Australia honestly changed my life. Moving here from Japan by myself was a huge decision. It wasn’t always easy, and some days are challenging, but the people around me are so kind, fun and supportive. They make everything better. I’ve met incredible friends, grown so much, and experienced things I never imagined.
Looking back, none of this would’ve happened if I hadn’t taken that first step.
If you're even thinking about studying abroad, I’d say go for it. It might feel scary, but your worries will pass and what you gain is worth so much more. You never know what kind of life is waiting for you on the other side. For me, coming to Australia was the best decision I could’ve made.
