Welfare arrangements for U18 Student visa holders

Translated PDFs are available for download with important information about welfare arrangements for minor (under 18 years) student visa holders.

Important reminder: Advising on guardian arrangements

A minor Student visa holder must obtain approval to change their welfare arrangements.

If an existing student guardian needs to depart Australia while the student stays onshore, the guardian must provide the following evidence before they leave:

  • compelling and compassionate reason for the guardian’s travel, and
  • confirmed alternative welfare arrangements for the U18 student’s accommodation, general welfare and support until the guardian returns.

Student visa holders who are under 18 years of age (U18) must notify the Australian Department of Home Affairs of changes to welfare arrangements through the ‘Change in Situation’ page.

Why this matters

Proper welfare arrangements help keep students safe while they are in Australia.

If the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs is not notified or does not approve the new arrangements, both the guardian’s and the student’s visas may be cancelled.

How you can help

We encourage you to remind students and their guardians of these important requirements when a guardian needs to change their arrangements.

The Department of Home Affairs has prepared easy-to-understand posters in different languages to help you explain these requirements.
