What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?
All students who complete part or all of their studies in Australia must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is their personal education number, required for all nationally recognised study. Made up of 10 letters and numbers, the USI is free and stays with a learner for life. It keeps a record of learner qualifications, prior learning and statements of attainment.
How to help prepare students for getting a USI
Inform students planning to study in Australia that they:
- can enrol to study in Australia before getting a USI, but
- must get their USI as soon as possible after arriving in Australia, so that they can provide it to their education or training provider, and
- may not be able to graduate or receive a statement of attainment without a USI.
Creating a USI
Create a USI via the USI website.
- Students can create a USI with their Australian visa and non-Australian passport.
- An Australian visa is only valid to create a USI while the student is in Australia.
- Students need to enter their name for the USI account exactly as it appears on the Australian visa.
